Secure Care in Focus: International Perspectives to Inform Queensland Practice

Queensland’s child protection and youth justice systems are navigating rising complexity, shifting legislation, and increasing pressure to keep children safe while upholding their rights. Around the world, jurisdictions such as Scotland, Finland, Iceland, the Netherlands, Canada and Hawaii are rethinking secure care – investing in stronger community alternatives, clearer safeguards and modern corporate parenting approaches.
This webinar brings those global perspectives directly into the Queensland context.
Across 90 minutes, we will unpack what evidence-informed, rights-respecting secure care actually looks like, explore international innovations, and translate them into practical implications for Queensland’s practice. We will also share opportunities for deeper learning, including a proposed study tour across Europe and the UK.
This session is designed for leaders, practitioners and policymakers working in child protection, out-of-home care, youth justice, residential care, and government strategy and reform, along with PeakCare members and sector partners committed to strengthening outcomes for children and young people.
The webinar will be led by Chief Executive Officer Tom Allsop, with a keynote presentation from Kate Crowe, Churchill Fellow, followed by a panel discussion featuring Tom Allsop, Kate Crowe, Jo Roff from IFYS, and an additional guest to be confirmed.
