Couples with property pools less than $500,000 will have access to a streamlined court service through a new Pilot Program trial in four Federal Circuit Court Registries, including Brisbane. The project aims to ensure families do not exhaust limited assets on legal expenses, with the possibility of avoiding a court hearing. Associated measures to assist property dispute resolutions in family separation cases include: a two-year trial of lawyer-assisted mediation run by Legal Aid Commissions to support families with asset pools up to $500,000 (excluding debt) to resolve property disputes; and additional funding to Family Relationship Centres across Australia to assist families reach agreement about property division.
