The CREATE 2018 Out-of-home care in Australia report presents findings from a survey of 1,275 children and young people on their experiences. The survey found that 81% of respondents felt quite happy in their current placement, and that 93% felt safe and secure. The report highlights particular issues identified including barriers to participation in decision making; lack of support available in residential placements; and the need for better preparation for the transition to independence. The survey found that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people felt being connected to culture was very important, with an average rating of 76 out of 100 in importance. One-third of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people surveyed felt connected to culture, with one-third feeling only a little connected. Less than 18% of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people were aware of their cultural care plan. Access the report and view the infographic findings snapshots here.
