Lighthouse Resources – Strengths Approach: Orientation to Practice

Two-day in person workshop introducing the values-driven basis of the strengths-based approach

Lighthouse Resources presents Strengths Approach: Orientation to Practice

This workshop will provide participants with a foundation for using the strengths based approach. It will introduce participants to the beliefs and principles of this values-driven practice, and make direct links between these and the skills and processes of the strengths approach. This training will be experiential and interactive, with plenty of opportunities to reflect on demonstrations, have a go at using the ideas, skills and tools in a spirit of play and experimentation.

Examples from recent practice will be offered for reflection and deconstruction, and attention will also be given to the opportunities and restraints participants may encounter in applying these ideas and practices in their own work contexts. Many past participants have been delighted to have a shared language to describe their existing practice ideas, and to take the ideas beyond what they already know, developing a richer understanding of setting the scene for professional growth through practice, reflection and further training.

At the completion of the workshop participants will have:

Identified and explored:

  • the key principles and beliefs of a strengths approach
  • the stages and processes of strengths-based work
  • conversational tools that support and sustain client’s initiatives
  • therapeutic tools and letters that help amplify preferred changes in client’s lives
  • identified collaborative ways to work with clients, their families and other stakeholders
  • self-care and supervision practices to sustain ourselves in the work place
  • how to incorporate the strengths approach into our practice framework

Practised key skills of the approach:

  • externalising
  • reframing and ‘normalising’
  • exploring exceptions and identifying strengths
  • defining pictures of the future and developing goals
  • using a five-stage mapping tool for client-directed change
  • ensuring change is noticed and measured
  • use the strengths cards
  • use the ‘change documents’ such as certificates and letters

Discussed implications for service delivery and organisational processes including:

  • client-owned recording and information systems
  • implications for service delivery for specific work contexts
