Mission Australia and Black Dog Institute have released the Youth Mental Health Report Youth Survey 2012 – 2016 representing five years of national data on young people’s concerns, levels of distress, and where they turn to for help and support. The report finds one in four young people are at risk of serious mental illness; mental illness risk becomes most prevalent in the older teen years; and the risk is greater in Indigenous groups and young women. These findings highlight the need for young people to have access to mental health education, evidence based services and interventions across a continuum of needs. The results also highlight the need for population wide education and support to aid in the prevention of mental health disorders or, where this is not possible, to ensure early intervention to minimise harm.
