The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) has released Youth Justice in Australia, and related fact sheets with state and territory specific information. The bulletin discusses the numbers and rates of young people under youth justice supervision in 2015-16. On average nationally, 5,500 young people (aged 10-17 years old) are under youth justice supervision on any given day, showing a steady decline over the past five years. Queensland has the second highest number of young people under supervision overall, constituting 27% of the national total and representing a higher rate at 28 per 10,000 than the national average of 21 per 10,000 children aged 10-17 years. Queensland also had less males under supervision at 78% compared with 82% nationally. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people are still overrepresented in the system, making up 48% of young people under supervision nationally and 55% in Queensland.
