Foster and kinship carers undertake one of the most important roles in our community — providing a safe, caring home for vulnerable children and young people. The Queensland Child Protection Commission of Inquiry recommended the management and support of all foster and kinship carers be transferred from Child Safety to the non-government sector. Foster and kinship care service providers are better placed to respond to carers by providing consistent contact and support; respite care; access to practical and specialist training and advocacy. The Department advises that the transfer of the management of carers to the non-government sector is now underway in Moreton Bay, Sunshine Coast/Gympie, South East Queensland, Toowoomba and Ipswich/Springfield, with Central, North and Far North Queensland set to be transferred by the end of the year. For more info, carers can talk to their child safety service centre or go to DCCSDS website.
