PeakCare warmly congratulates the QCPW 2018 Award recipients

Queensland Child Protection Week (QCPW) was officially launched yesterday with the Awards Ceremony at Parliament House where the child protection sector came together to recognise Queenslanders who have gone the extra distance in protecting children and young people and supporting families. Now in its 32nd year, Child Protection Week is a national event held during the first full week of September. From a front-line Queensland Police Service Child Protection Investigator to a grandmother who volunteers to assist children during frightening court processes, the 2018 QCPW Award winners have made outstanding contributions to child protection in Queensland.

PeakCare offers our sincere congratulations to Award recipients and our thanks to all Queenslanders across the government and non-government sector and communities who prioritise the safety and wellbeing of children and families. We also thank the Queensland Child Protection Week Committee (QCPWC) for all that they do in highlighting the many and significant issues associated with child protection and child and family wellbeing.

Professional (non-government) Award: Jo Bryant
Professional (government) Award: Detective Sergeant Anthony Joseph McNae
Volunteer Award: Jan Brown
Regional Program Award: Angela Kerslake, Claire OliverJamie Coburn, Francette Kerk and Kerri Chard
Education Initiative Award: Daniel Morcombe Foundation
Youth Participation Award: Alethea Beetson
Media and Communications Award: Kay McGrath
Addressing Overrepresentation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families, children and young people in the child protection system Award: Joanne Borg

At the launch, QCPWC Chair, Anna Nolan, noted that QCPW has as its key message the importance of listening to children and young people. “We say it like it is a simple undertaking. Perhaps it’s our naivete but we expect it to be so. However, examples such as the one I’ve outlined say that it isn’t so. Hence, we can never become complacent and we always need to be open to hearing from children and young people and be prepared to be questioned, challenged and held to account. Our organisations are larger than ever before. We have layers of hierarchy and clear delineations of power. Yes, we also have quality assurance processes, I should know – that’s my work area. However, in large hierarchical bureaucratic structures with clear balances of power, we all need to be committed to remaining able to critique, analyse, question, observe and most significantly to listen to children and young people and stand up when up something isn’t right. To do so takes the considered effort and intent of every person who holds a role in child protection. It is us up to us, every single one of us, to play our part in this community of child protection.”
