‘Children and young people with gender and sexual orientation diversity’ is a new policy approved by the Department of Children, Youth Justice and Multicultural Affairs (DCYJMA) outlining the Department’s commitment to supporting children and young people with gender and sexual orientation diversity. The Department advises that the development of this policy and an accompanying Practice Guide by the Office of the Chief Practitioner is the first step being taken towards meeting the safety, belonging and wellbeing needs of children and young people with gender and sexual orientation diversity.
The policy and Practice Guide acknowledge that children and young people require information, support and access to services in order to safely explore and express their sexual and gender identity. This requires DCYJMA staff, carers and funded service providers to have knowledge and an understanding of gender and sexual orientation diversity and how to best support children and young people with diverse genders and sexual orientations. The DCYJMA encourages you to review the policy and consider how to support its implementation within your service.
