Changes resulting from the Child Protection Reform Amendment Act 2017 have commenced this year, allowing the Department of Child Safety, Youth and Women to provide more information to people who are, or have been in out-of-home care, parents and guardians, the police and child welfare authorities in other jurisdictions. Further changes will take effect later in the year, under four key areas: Safe care and connection, that recognises the rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and the importance of ensuring the connection to family, community and culture; permanency, which focuses on promoting positive long-term outcomes; information sharing, which involves establishing a contemporary system-wide information-sharing regime; and other amendments, which will provide clarification around current provisions within the Act.
