Dovetail provides clinical advice and professional support to workers, services and communities across Queensland that engage with young people affected by alcohol and other drug use. Among other tools and resources, Dovetail has developed a suite of free good practice guides for the youth alcohol and drug sector, drawing from workers’ practice wisdom and research in the field.
The Good Practice Guide Practice Strategies and Interventions has recently been reprinted in an online access version, and free copies are available. This guide provides practical advice and strategies for anyone working with young people using alcohol or other drugs, touching on the theoretical frameworks behind drug and alcohol interventions and providing practical tools for workers to use in their practice. The guide canvasses the importance of the worker/young person relationship, characteristics of effective engagement, principles underpinning good youth outreach, and matching change processes and interventions to an individual’s stage of change.
Other guides are A Framework for Youth Alcohol and Other Drug Practice, for guidance on working with young people whose alcohol and other drug use creates significant vulnerability to harm, Legal and Ethical Dimensions of Practice, designed especially for Queensland youth workers, Working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Young People, and Working with families and significant others.
