QHRC – Introduction to the Human Rights Act (Cairns)

A two-hour introductory face-to-face session about the Queensland Human Rights Act

Queensland Human Rights Commission (QHRC) presents Introduction to the Human Rights Act (Cairns)

This course aims to raise participants’ awareness of their rights and responsibilities under the Queensland Human Rights Act 2019, through an overview of the key legal concepts and the functions of the Queensland Human Rights Commission. The course provides a basic introduction to the key elements of human rights law in Queensland.

This is an interactive, face-to-face session with a variety of visual and small group activities. It provides opportunities to explore the scope of the 23 human rights protected by the Act, as well as working through some scenarios to assess the compatibility of acts or decisions with human rights. The session allows time for questions.

Participants will learn about:

  • the functions of the Commission;
  • modern human rights law;
  • human rights law in Queensland;
  • responsibilities of public entities, courts and tribunals and the Queensland Parliament under the Act;
  • compatibility with human rights; and
  • human rights complaint processes

The session is suitable for anyone wanting information about human rights law in Queensland, but is particularly useful for general staff or volunteers delivering public services. Organisations may have obligations under the Queensland Human Rights Act 2019, if they are considered to be a public entity for the purpose of the Act.
