Coinciding with National Children’s Week, SNAICC and the Family Matters campaign on Thursday, 24th October launched a joint position paper calling for the establishment of a National Commissioner for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children and Young People. Establishing a dedicated National Commissioner will provide much needed oversight and accountability for systems and services, ensuring that the rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and young people are protected. The position paper has been endorsed by over 80 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and non-Indigenous NGOs and state-and-territory-based children’s commissioners and guardians that are working to improve outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children. To join PeakCare in supporting this important call, you can: Share the position paper with your networks and on social media including #BecauseOfThemWeMust and #KidsCommissioner; sign your organisation up to be an endorsee of the position paper; use the key points highlighted in PeakCare’s special announcement to develop your own media release; write, tweet or meet with your local federal member of parliament and ask them to support the call; support the call in your own state or territory if you do not have one already.
