In front line and service delivery roles, it is common for staff to fall into the role of ‘Pseudo Counsellor.’ This often occurs because clients and customers just need to speak with ‘someone’ and that ‘someone’ may be the first person who picks up the phone or is the first point of contact face to face.
Equally, staff can be the first point of contact for an individual experiencing a crisis, or someone who has experienced a stressful event. That individual may be in need of immediate assistance or may need comfort or emotional support.
Knowing what to say and how to respond to others in distress or those who have experienced a traumatic event can feel overwhelming. Things can be further compounded when staff have not attended training in how to respond in these situations. Many staff feel daunted or unsure of what to say, how to say it and when to say things. It is important to be equipped with the specialist knowledge and skills to be able to respond in the most effective way, supporting themselves and the other person.
This TACT program has been designed for individuals working with people who require support where they are not employed in the role of a trained counsellor. This presentation will assist participants when they find themselves in a counselling role by accident. We also explore the impact of stress and resilience and review a framework in which participants can look after themselves and the client in distress.
A key aim of this presentation is to support participants to develop a framework to respond in a way that leaves them and the person in need of support or assistance, feeling satisfied with the process and outcome of the interaction or communication. This presentation will provide participants with the necessary skills and tools to be able to respond appropriately, efficiently and effectively when they are the first point of contact or when there may not be a trained qualified counsellor or practitioner immediately available to refer the client to.
