The South Australian Child Protection Systems Royal Commission Report, The life they deserve, was released in early August 2016. The report is presented in two volumes. The first volume sets out what the Royal Commission did to examine the adequacy of current laws and policies to protect children and young people, system deficits and 260 recommendations addressing a wide range of structural, system and practice aspects across the SA government and service system. The second volume contains 5 case studies that examine the operation of the system and practice quality in specific areas. Four focus on the individual circumstances of young children, intervening in high risk families, leaving care, and children with complex needs in out of home care.

PeakCare’s Annual General Meeting was held yesterday afternoon and for the first time as far as anyone can recall, a secret ballot was needed to elect the Board for 2013 due to a higher number of nominees than vacancies.

Michael Tizard, the Board President said that this was an indication of the strong support being shown to PeakCare.  “It says that member agencies are very keen to play a part in assisting PeakCare to perform their very important role.”

Gratitude was expressed to the Board of 2012 and newly elected Board members were congratulated and welcomed during the meeting.  Those elected to join the Board included Tracy Adams, Avryl Gration, Shirley Pevitt and Shelley Wall.

Guest speaker at the AGM was Margaret Wenham, senior journalist from the Courier Mail.  Margaret gave the audience an much greater insight and added perspective on the role played by media in improving Queensland’s child protection system.
