More about the Royal Commission into the South Australian child protection system

by PeakCare Qld
on 18th August 2016

The South Australian Child Protection Systems Royal Commission Report, The life they deserve, was released in early August 2016. The report is presented in two volumes. The first volume sets out what the Royal Commission did to examine the adequacy of current laws and policies to protect children and young people, system deficits and 260 recommendations addressing a wide range of structural, system and practice aspects across the SA government and service system. The second volume contains 5 case studies that examine the operation of the system and practice quality in specific areas. Four focus on the individual circumstances of young children, intervening in high risk families, leaving care, and children with complex needs in out of home care.

PeakCare Qld will be holding its Annual General Meeting on: Tuesday, 18th December 2012 from 3:30pm at the offices of BoysTown, Suite 11, Black Street (nr corner of Castlemaine Street), Milton 4064 followed by end of year drinks with Board and PeakCare staff members.

This year there are four (4) vacancies for Board Membership. The nominations for these positions are as follows;

Nominee: Adams, Ms Tracy - BoysTown
Proposer: Tizard, Mr Michael – The Benevolent Society
Seconder: Lines, Dr Katrina – ACT For Kids

In 2012, I filled a casual vacancy on the PeakCare Board having already been performing the role of a co-opted Board member. I am the Chief Executive Officer of BoysTown, an organisation that provides services nationally to children, young people and families. In addition to service provision, BoysTown undertakes research and advocates on a broad range of issues impacting the lives of young people.

Nominee: Carter, Ms Jane – Churches of Christ Care

Proposer: Swain, Mr David – Churches of Christ Care
Seconder: Sterling, Ms Leith – Anglicare Southern Queensland

My focus within my role is the provision of client focussed care that supports children and young people and encourages them to respect and value themselves and feel positive about their future. I see a strong case for changes within the current child protection sector and am keen to be involved with PeakCare at this pivotally important time.  During 2012, I served as a co-opted member of the Board and am now seeking election as a Board member.
Nominee: Gration, Ms Avryl – Mission Australia
Proposer: Tizard, Mr Michael – The Benevolent Society
Seconder: Pevitt, Ms Shirley – Anglicare North Queensland

I am presently Acting State Director for Mission Australia through which position I have oversight of three Referral for Active Intervention (RAI) Services. I previously managed out of home care and intensive family support services. All this experience enables me to add to this discussion in PeakCare and I would be pleased to serve another term as a Board member.

Nominee: Pevitt, Ms Shirley – Anglicare North Queensland

Proposer: Gration, Ms Avryl – Mission Australia
Seconder: Lines, Dr Katrina – Act for Kids
It is important that the Far North and Northern regions have representation on the PeakCare Board. Anglicare has child protection programs across both regions. It is vital that we continue to have a voice at the state level.  I am an active member of the Board currently and am keen to serve another term.
Nominee: Sterling, Ms Leith – Anglicare Southern Queensland

Proposer: Corbiere, Ms Kathy – Anglicare Southern Queensland
Seconder: Carter, Ms Jane – Churches of Christ Care

I am currently employed as Anglicare’s Director of Quality, Learning and Workforce Development. I have 25+ years working in children’s and youth services including disability, education and child protection. Prior to joining Anglicare in 2010, I was Child Safety Director in Education Queensland for two years. I am passionate about the need to provide quality services to children in care with a focus not only on their safety, but also on creating conditions for positive change and better futures.  For these reasons, I am seeking re-election to the PeakCare Board.

Nominee: Wall, Ms Shelley – Mercy Family Services

Proposer: King, Mr Steven – Mercy Family Services
Seconder: Tizard, Mr Michael – The Benevolent Society

I have 20 years child protection experience to contribute to the governance of PeakCare. I have also previously served on the Board and feel this experience will serve my contribution well. If elected, I am committed to working on PeakCare’s Board to realise its aim to work to pursue excellence in policy development, planning, implementation and the delivery of services to promote the safety, well-being of children, young people and their families.
