More about the Royal Commission into the South Australian child protection system

on 18th August 2016

The South Australian Child Protection Systems Royal Commission Report, The life they deserve, was released in early August 2016. The report is presented in two volumes. The first volume sets out what the Royal Commission did to examine the adequacy of current laws and policies to protect children and young people, system deficits and 260 recommendations addressing a wide range of structural, system and practice aspects across the SA government and service system. The second volume contains 5 case studies that examine the operation of the system and practice quality in specific areas. Four focus on the individual circumstances of young children, intervening in high risk families, leaving care, and children with complex needs in out of home care.

Earlier this year, PeakCare facilitated a series of seven roundtable meetings with Member Agencies and Supporters at the following locations - Eight Miles Plains (18th February), Nerang (24th February), Ipswich (25th February), Bundaberg (26th February), Kedron (31st March), Rockhampton (1st April) and Townsville (9th April).  The roundtables were held to re-cap and reflect on child protection policy and service developments that have occurred over recent months and years following the Carmody Child Protection Commission of Inquiry and consider the question of where to from here.

This week, PeakCare will be pleased to release copies of a report on the outcomes of these discussions to our Member Agencies and Supporters.  The report incorporates an account of the matters where there was a consensus of views as well as those where there were some differences of opinion. On 2nd July, a presentation about the major themes that emerged during the roundtables and that are featured in the report will be made to the Stakeholder Advisory Group, one of the major forums established post the Carmody Inquiry charged with responsibilities for guiding the child protection reform agenda and its implementation.

PeakCare regards the Roundtables Report as important in influencing our organisation’s future work priorities and in informing our ongoing constructive dialogue with the State Government, its departments and other stakeholders.  Very importantly, it is hoped that the report will serve as a useful catalyst for further discussion and debate with and amongst our Member Agencies and Supporters about the best ways forward in improving outcomes for Queensland children, young people and families.   Our appreciation is extended to all who contributed their practice experience and wisdom to the report’s contents.

Upon receiving your copy, Member Agencies and Supporters are invited to forward any further comments they wish to make about the matters discussed to Lindsay Wegener.
