More about the Royal Commission into the South Australian child protection system

by PeakCare Qld
on 18th August 2016

The South Australian Child Protection Systems Royal Commission Report, The life they deserve, was released in early August 2016. The report is presented in two volumes. The first volume sets out what the Royal Commission did to examine the adequacy of current laws and policies to protect children and young people, system deficits and 260 recommendations addressing a wide range of structural, system and practice aspects across the SA government and service system. The second volume contains 5 case studies that examine the operation of the system and practice quality in specific areas. Four focus on the individual circumstances of young children, intervening in high risk families, leaving care, and children with complex needs in out of home care.

Nominations are now being called from PeakCare Member Agencies and Supporters of people wishing to join a ‘Consultation Network’ via Yammer to explore, discuss and debate the best possible Pathways to Family Support – Accessing the Right Support at the Right Time.
Participants in this network will take account of relevant findings and recommendations of the Queensland Child Protection Commission of Inquiry and the Government’s response to these recommendations and be invited to consider how these recommendations can be best applied in practice and within a local community context.  Over a number of weeks, participants will be asked to draw on their own experiences and local knowledge and will also receive input in the form of research, contemporary literature and presentations by invited ‘guests’ so that lessons learned from elsewhere can also inform and sometimes challenge our thinking.
Importantly, the discussions that take place within this network will be used to inform a ‘co-design workshop’ that the Department of Communities, Child Safety and Disability Services in liaison with PeakCare, the Queensland Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Child Protection Peak (QATSICPP) and Queensland Council of Social Services (QCOSS), is envisaging will be held within the next few weeks.
This is the second ‘Consultation Network’ to be set up by PeakCare – the first being the ‘Bills Consultation Network’.  If you are not yet familiar with Yammer and the ways in which PeakCare will be making use of this new private social network, you are invited to watch this short video - ‘The Road to Reform – hitting the ground running!’.
Nominations of people wishing to join the ‘Paving the Pathways to Family Support Network’ should be emailed to as soon as possible (preferably by no later than 15th April).  Please email the name of each person, their position title, name of their organisation and their email address and include ‘Paving the Pathways to Family Support Network’ as the subject of your email.  Upon receiving your nominations, the nominated persons will then each receive an email from PeakCare with some instructions about joining the network.
Please note that only PeakCare Member Agencies and Supporters are able to join this network.  Others may be invited to join the network as ‘guests’ of PeakCare.
