by PeakCare Qld
on 18th August 2016

The South Australian Child Protection Systems Royal Commission Report, The life they deserve, was released in early August 2016. The report is presented in two volumes. The first volume sets out what the Royal Commission did to examine the adequacy of current laws and policies to protect children and young people, system deficits and 260 recommendations addressing a wide range of structural, system and practice aspects across the SA government and service system. The second volume contains 5 case studies that examine the operation of the system and practice quality in specific areas. Four focus on the individual circumstances of young children, intervening in high risk families, leaving care, and children with complex needs in out of home care.

By now, all Member Agencies will have received notice of our call for nominations   for election to the PeakCare Board and, if we can go by the number of enquiries we are receiving, there is some very strong interest out there in joining the Board.  It is incredibly pleasing to know that we have Members wanting to perform this critical role in supporting the work of PeakCare.

The role of a Board Member is indeed an important one.  When determining whether or not to accept their nomination, prospective candidates should carefully consider their willingness and capacity to regularly attend and actively participate in Board meetings.  Some Board members may also be requested to join a sub-committee of the Board.

Prospective candidates must also consider that, if elected, they will be required to perform a governance role in maintaining and achieving the best interests of PeakCare.  Board members are not elected to represent the views or interests of a single organisation (including those of their employer) or single interest group with which they have a personal or professional affiliation.  All members of the Board are required to contribute to, and operate in accordance with, PeakCare’s Constitution and the organisation’s vision, purpose, beliefs and values, as stated within PeakCare’s strategic plan, and maintain a sector-wide perspective in doing so.  In performing a governance role, Board members are required to support and assist PeakCare to exercise a robust and independent voice that is well-informed by research and the full range of experiences, opinions and concerns held by our members, supporters and other stakeholders.

PeakCare looks forward to receiving nominations for candidates who are keen to take on this challenging, but very rewarding role. The election of Board Members will take place during PeakCare’s Annual General Meeting.  This year, PeakCare is planning to host a bigger and more exciting Annual General Meeting than ever before. There are some details of this event that need to be confirmed before we are able to, hopefully very soon, release these details to you.
