More about the Royal Commission into the South Australian child protection system

by PeakCare Qld
on 18th August 2016

The South Australian Child Protection Systems Royal Commission Report, The life they deserve, was released in early August 2016. The report is presented in two volumes. The first volume sets out what the Royal Commission did to examine the adequacy of current laws and policies to protect children and young people, system deficits and 260 recommendations addressing a wide range of structural, system and practice aspects across the SA government and service system. The second volume contains 5 case studies that examine the operation of the system and practice quality in specific areas. Four focus on the individual circumstances of young children, intervening in high risk families, leaving care, and children with complex needs in out of home care.

Over 100 ‘preventers’ attended the first of PeakCare Queensland’s Meet the Preventers Child Protection Expos held at Griffith University at Logan City yesterday. The discussions and debates were lively and animated and imaginations were stretched and challenged.

Emails containing positive feedback are already flowing in and comments are now being posted on our Facebook page.

A sample of some of the feedback received:

“I thought the Expo was excellent. It really brought the sector together for some interesting and stimulating debate which should inform the Inquiry. It was also very well run so congratulations to all the PeakCare staff who were making it all happen.”

“Well done! The Expo went very well.”

“The Forum in Logan was fantastic today, I highly recommend that everyone attends across the other regions!! Really fantastic speakers on panels, thought provoking and wonderful to hear different perspectives! Great work PeakCare, thank you for bringing us together!!“

“It was great. I got to have my say!”

Positive feedback was also received from a representative from the Queensland Child Protection Commission of Inquiry who found the discussions to be very informative and useful for the Inquiry.

Some constructive criticism has also been received.  Some have said it would have been better if the panel-led discussions were longer so that more time could be have been given to people to express their viewpoints:

“I did not get a chance to voice my opinion.”

PeakCare will work on this for our future Expos to ensure that everyone who wants to share their opinion has the chance to do so.

For those who attended the Logan Expo, a short survey has been created for you to provide us with further feedback.

Click here to complete the short survey

It will soon be the turn of people from other areas of the State to have their say.  Make sure that your organisation is well represented at the Expos to be held at:

Check out our photo album to see if you recognise any of the people who participated in the Logan Expo. More photos will also be posted to our facebook page.

PeakCare would like to thank everyone who attended our first Meet the Preventers Expo, however don’t let Logan have all the say!

There are still three more Expos left to attend during November.
